Forty Days of Threats
For forty days the Philistine giant Goliath taunted Israel's army, and no one dared to face him. Only the boy David, who had brought food to his brothers, was outraged at the insult (1 Samuel 17).
A Sling-stone Instead of Armor
David took off the armor Saul gave him, chose five smooth stones from the brook, and stepped forward with only a sling and a staff. He relied not on a sword but on "the name of the Lord Almighty."
Victory by a Single Stone
The sling-stone sank into Goliath's forehead and the giant fell. The event showed that "the battle belongs to the Lord," and lifted an unknown boy toward becoming Israel's future king.
