What is the mark of the beast (666)?

666 is the number of the beast — the God-opposing power that demands worship — and the mark on forehead and hand symbolizes allegiance in thought and deed. It is the dark mirror of God’s seal on His people, not a barcode, chip, or vaccine.

The context: enforced worship and economic pressure

In Revelation 13 the beast blasphemes God, persecutes the saints, and demands worship; those without its mark cannot "buy or sell" (13:17). John’s first readers knew that pressure well — refusing emperor worship could cost your trade and your life. Of the number itself the text says, "it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six" (13:18). In a book where seven signals completeness, six falling short three times over pictures a power that mimics God but never attains Him.

The counterfeit of God’s seal

Before Revelation describes the beast’s mark, it shows God sealing "the servants of our God in their foreheads" (7:3), and the Lamb’s company with "his Father’s name written in their foreheads" (14:1). Forehead and hand stand for thought and action. Both marks are symbols of belonging: whose are you, in what you think and what you do? Just as God’s seal is not a visible stamp, the beast’s mark is not one product or technology.

Discernment, not panic

Across history 666 has been pinned on emperors, popes, barcodes, ID cards, chips — each time fueling fear more than faith. The text calls instead for "wisdom" (13:18): the discernment to recognize, in any era, powers that demand the ultimate allegiance that belongs to Christ alone. And believers need not live scanning products in fear: "The Lord knoweth them that are his" (2 Timothy 2:19), and the Lamb has already overcome (Revelation 17:14). No one bears the beast’s mark by accident.
