Is depression a lack of faith?

No. Great believers in Scripture walked through deep darkness, and God answered them with food, sleep, and a gentle voice — not rebuke. Depression is not a spiritual report card, and seeking treatment and counseling is wisdom, not unbelief.

Scripture does not hide its heroes’ darkness

Right after his greatest victory, Elijah sat under a juniper tree and "requested for himself that he might die" (1 Kings 19:4). God’s prescription was not a lecture on faith but sleep, baked bread, water — twice — and then a still small voice (19:5-12). The psalmist wrestles openly: "Why art thou cast down, O my soul?" (Psalm 42:11), and Psalm 88 ends still in the dark. That such prayers are in the Bible means the darkness is not disqualification.

Humans are bodies as well as souls

Depression involves brain chemistry, hormones, sleep, seasons, grief, and loss — body and life woven together. The same Bible that prescribes "a little wine for thy stomach’s sake" (1 Timothy 5:23) supports using medicine and counseling for an ailing mind, just as we cast a broken leg. Telling a depressed believer "you just need more faith" repeats the error of Job’s friends — and it delays treatment that God’s common grace has provided.

What the church — and the sufferer — can hold onto

"The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart" (Psalm 34:18). If God draws near to the crushed, His people must too: "weep with them that weep" (Romans 12:15) before explaining anything. For the one in the valley: small rhythms beat big resolutions — one short psalm, daylight and a walk, sleep, regular care, and not being alone. "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me" (Psalm 23:4). He did not promise no valleys; He promised company in them.
