Does suicide send a person to hell?

The Bible never declares suicide unforgivable. Salvation rests on belonging to Christ, not on the nature of one’s final act. At the same time, life belongs to God — if you are fighting these thoughts, please reach out now (in the US, call or text 988).

What actually determines salvation

The idea that suicide automatically damns — because one cannot repent of it afterward — comes from medieval tradition, not from Scripture. By that logic, any unconfessed sin at the moment of death would undo salvation. But salvation is not a ledger cleared sin-by-sin; it is union with Christ: "neither death, nor life ... nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:38-39). No verse makes suicide the exception to that promise.

Why this can never be said lightly

None of this makes suicide a neutral option. Life is God’s: "the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away" (Job 1:21), and "thou shalt not kill" (Exodus 20:13) guards one’s own life too. Despair also lies — "everyone would be better off without me" is never true, and those left behind carry lifelong wounds. When Elijah prayed to die, God’s answer was not death but rest, food, and a renewed calling (1 Kings 19). For the person in darkness, God’s will is clear: live.

If you are struggling — and if you are grieving

Suicidal thoughts are an emergency, not merely a prayer request. In the US, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) — and tell one trusted person and your doctor today; asking for help is obedience, not weakness. If you have lost someone to suicide: their eternity is in the hands of the Judge of all the earth, who is both just and merciful (Genesis 18:25) — no human verdict is required of you. What God speaks to you is not condemnation but nearness: "The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart" (Psalm 34:18). Grief counseling and your church community are means of that nearness.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I lost a believing family member to suicide. Are they saved?

Salvation belongs to those who are in Christ, and one final act of a mind under crushing darkness does not sever that union (Romans 8:38-39). Entrust them to the faithful Judge, refuse false guilt — it was not your fault — and let yourself be helped through grief support and your church.
