Old Testament · character
Nehemiah
A leader of rebuilding who prayed and then acted at once.
Grieved at the news of Jerusalem's broken walls, Nehemiah combined prayer with action and rebuilt the walls in just fifty-two days.
A Man Who Prayed First
At the news that the walls had fallen, he first wept, fasted, and prayed. Even in the moment of making his request before the king, he "prayed to the God of heaven" (Nehemiah 2). Before every great task, prayer always came first.
Completion Amid Opposition
Mockery, threats, and plots never ceased, yet he had the people work with a tool in one hand and a weapon in the other, completing the wall in fifty-two days. Then he rebuilt the community upon the word of God.
