Is gambling a sin? What about the lottery?

The word "gambling" isn’t in the Bible, but its principles surround it: warnings against wealth without work, covetousness as idolatry, and love of neighbor — since gambling wins only what others lose. The biblical alternative is honest work and contentment.

Wealth without work — a warned-against shortcut

"Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase" (Proverbs 13:11). Scripture consistently pairs provision with work: "thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be" (Psalm 128:2). Gambling inverts that order, staking hope on chance instead of providence — and "he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent" (Proverbs 28:20). The deeper issue is theological: where do you believe provision comes from?

A structure built on neighbors’ losses

Honest commerce can create value for both sides; a gambling pot creates nothing — every dollar won is a dollar someone else lost, often someone who could least afford it. That structure sits poorly beside "thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself" (Matthew 22:39). Add the addictive mechanics engineered to whisper "one more try," and Scripture’s diagnosis of the engine underneath is precise: "covetousness, which is idolatry" (Colossians 3:5).

What about one lottery ticket?

Buying a ticket won’t unsave you — salvation isn’t scored that way. The more honest question is why we buy it: habitual tickets usually carry a quiet despair ("my ordinary faithfulness will never be enough") and a jackpot hope the Bible calls a mirage. Its counteroffer: "godliness with contentment is great gain" (1 Timothy 6:6). And for anyone already hooked: addiction rarely breaks in secret — "Bear ye one another’s burdens" (Galatians 6:2). Telling a pastor, a group, or a counselor is not failure; it is the first act of faith.
